Raccoons are nocturnal creatures that are great climbers. Raccoons are commonly found invading attics, or living beneath decks and crawlspaces. They are commonly seen or heard at night.

When raccoons enter into a new space they very quickly begin creating toilet areas, and can cause a lot of damage quickly. Raccoon feces can contain roundworm parasites, particularly baylisascaris procyonis. The eggs of this roundworm are notoriously hard to kill and very dangerous.

It is imperative if you ever see raccoon feces that you keep your distance and DO NOT attempt to clean the mess using standard cleaning methods.

Raccoons are currently being targeted for oral rabies vaccination by the state of Tennessee. 

Seeing a raccoon during the day is not always a sign of a sick animal. Occasionally female raccoons who are nursing baby raccoons will leave during the day to find food. Also, there are many times when an animal is displaced from the area that it is living and is out during the day seeking new shelter.

Nonetheless, it is important to always steer clear from raccoons, no matter how friendly they may seem to be. You can never know if an animal is sick or not, so always keep your distance.
